Viking Sports Weekly (May 9) Athletics


A look at what’s happening in Cleveland State Athletics…

Softball
-The Vikings (22-22, 18-8) will open Horizon League Tournament play as the No. 2 seed this week, and will begin play on Thursday, May 12, with the championship game set for Saturday, May 14.
-This year’s #HLSB Tournament will be hosted by Youngstown State, with action running Wednesday, May 11 through Saturday, May 14.
-Last time out, Cleveland State went 2-1 at Detroit Mercy in the final regular season series, finishing the regular season with an 18-8 #HLSB record, marking the most league wins since 2010.  

Track & Field
-Cleveland State closed out the 2022 outdoor campaign last weekend, posting a strong finish at the Horizon League Outdoor Championships. 
-The Vikings recorded three times that rank in the top-five in the CSU Record Book, including a CSU record from Dynesty Ervin in the 400 Meter Dash finals. 
-Five Vikings also notched personal-best times on the weekend; Kiannah Sarver, Margaret Smith, Sara Timberlake, Dynesty Ervin, and Emily Nemeth.  

Viking of the Week Nominees
Dynesty Ervin, Track & Field
Set a CSU record in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 58.41 after advancing to the event finals at the #HLTF Outdoor Championships. Also part of Cleveland State’s 4×400 Meter Relay Team that posted a time of 4:03.66 to rank among the top-five best times in program history. 

Courtney Fernette, Softball
Helped the Vikings go 2-1 over the final weekend of regular season play, leading CSU to the No. 2 seed in the upcoming tournament. Hit a home run in all three games against Detroit Mercy along with six RBI and three runs scored. Is tied for ninth in the #HLSB standings with six home runs on the season.
